This is the first post in (hopefully) a long line of "Real Weddings" posts, a major feature I'm adding to the blog. Please stay tuned for more Real Weddings or contact me if you'd like your own wedding featured!
For this series I plan to feature weddings that I find particularly unique and special, and to allow the bride and groom to have a voice about their special day. After all, I feel that the bride and groom really have the best insight into their weddings. They are the ones to whom the details mean the most to! As this blog is all about the details, what better way to see them than through the eyes of the couple who planned them!
I had the good fortune of attending Melanie and Gilbert's wedding back in May and I must say it was one of the best weddings I have ever attended! The ceremony was quaint and personal with a good dose of humor mixed throughout. The cocktail hour, which was held in the Allerton Hotel's world-famous Tip Top Tap, had absolutely stunning views of Michigan Avenue and Lake Michigan and was romantically illuminated by the dusk of early summer. The reception was bangin ': amazing food, great company, beautiful tablescapes, fun music that totally reflected the couple's tastes...and then to top it off they had a photo-booth and late night snacks! It was truly the perfect marriage of elegant and fun, just like Melanie and Gilbert.
Melanie, the beautiful bride, was sweet enough to let me interview her. Below is our conversation:
Me: Where was your wedding held (state, venue)? Is there a special meaning about this place for you (what made you choose this place)?
Melanie: The Allerton Hotel, Chicago IL. Groom's hometown, and bride wanted a fancy downtown wedding with awesome city scape photos.
What were your wedding colors? What made you choose these colors?
Navy Blue, Fuschia, and Grey. Seemed like fun spring colors.
What were challenges you faced planning your wedding? Do you have any advice for future brides in regards to these challenges, or in general?
Planning a wedding out of town is tough – you have to make extra trips back and forth and squeeze in as much planning as possible over the weekend – which is difficult because most wedding vendors have weddings to do over the weekend! Make sure you give yourself plenty of time, and budget if you’re an out of town bride. Those extra planning trips really add up, and like I said, take a little longer to lock down vendors based on weekend availability. If you can make time for a visit during the work week, it’s much easier to get an appointment!
What are 5 words you would use to describe your wedding?
Elegant, detailed, personal, unique, fun!
What was your favorite detail/details about your special day?
I loved that 1. My uncle officiated the ceremony, 2. We got married under that gorgeous chuppa, 3. UPLIGHING at the reception, 4. The awesome city skyline view from the windows of the reception.
Were there any handmade touches?
My sister made picture charms of my father, who is deceased, that I attached to my bouquet. One of my bridesmaids made my card box.
Were there any uniquely meaningful items?
Yes- we set up a memorial table with a special candle that highlighted those family members who have passed, along with their pictures in frames.
What inspired you when you were planning your wedding?
I have been a bridesmaid in like 7 weddings – I tried to remember things I liked from them, and things my friends have told me they wish they’d had. I spent way too much time on pinterest, and also got inspiration from my meetings with my wedding coordinator and vendors.
Is there a story behind your dress?
I said yes to the dress in about 30 minutes. It was my first, and only appointment I went to – 3rd dress I tried on. Could not have been easier. For my full figured girls out there – you know how impressive that really is!
What was your favorite part of the day?
Saying ‘I do’ of course! The whole day was amazing, but it just literally flies by. All the details and work you put into planning your wedding are really for the benefit of your guests. If they have a great time, you’ve done well. I was happy to see the smiles on everyone’s faces.
